A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Friday, May 15
NC Museum of Art
(1935) Directed by Max Reinhardt. Olivia de Havilland, Dick Powell, James Cagney, Mickey Rooney. 133 min.
The only cinematic record of the influential 20th-century theatrical genius Reinhardt is this shimmering, enchanted version of one of Shakespeare’s great comedies. What fools these mortals be when they get lost in the wood and mix it up with some meddling fairies. The Warner Bros. stock company provides a truly splendid cast who can both speak and understand the Bard’s lines. Who would have thought Cagney such a deft and daft Shakespearean actor? Perhaps one of the most accessible versions of the Bard ever put on celluloid.
Carl Martin, Durham School of the Arts drama teacher and author of Shakespeare in a Box, will illuminate the process from page to stage to screen.
