CARMEN
by Georges Bizet
October 14 and 16, 2011
Memorial Auditorium, Progress Energy Center, Raleigh
Sung in French with English supertitles
Our season opens with Carmen, one of the most popular operas of all-time. Set in Spain, this riveting story tells the tale of a soldier with a past who is seduced by a gypsy woman who cares only about her own freedom. Featuring some of the best-known tunes in music, including the Habanera and Toreador Song.
THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER
by Philip Glass
January 19, 20 and 22, 2012
Fletcher Opera Theater, Progress Energy Center, Raleigh
Sung in English with English supertitles
A man visits from afar to try to help a sick old friend and his sister who live in a mysteriously haunted house. The gripping music perfectly fits this spooky story from Edgar Allan Poe. Glass’ gripping music sets the mood for this production performed in partnership with New Music Raleigh which features innovative video projections and is timed to celebrate the composer’s 75th birthday.
IL TROVATORE
by Giuseppe Verdi
April 27, 2012 – Meymandi Concert Hall, Progress Energy Center, Raleigh
April 29, 2012 – Memorial Hall, Chapel Hill
Semi-staged production, sung in Italian with English supertitles
Filled with ardent lovers, jealous rivals, and crazed gypsies, Il Trovatore has everything we love about Italian opera – most of all its enormous wealth of great melodies, including the famous Anvil Chorus.
