NORTH CAROLINA THEATRE DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER TO CHOREOGRAPH SEASON ONE OF NBC’S SMASH

North Carolina Theatre, the region’s premier producer of professional Broadway musical is excited to announce that North Carolina Theatre director and choreographer Josh Bergasse’s work will be seen in the first season of the highly anticipated NBC show SMASH.

SMASH is a musical drama that centers around the making of a musical based on the iconic Marilyn Monroe. From NBC, “SMASH celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of the Broadway theatre as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire – to be a ‘Smash’. Bergasse’s work is showcased in a scene showing Broadway’s Megan Hilty and company dancing in a rehearsal. Variety says that “[Director] Mayer enlisted choreographer Josh Bergasse (who danced in Hairspray) to conceptualize Marilyn’s dance numbers.” Bergasse directed and choreographed the NC Theatre critically acclaimed production, West Side Story in October of 2009.
“NC Theatre’s director/choreographer Joshua Bergasse re-creates the iconic Robbins steps with his superb cast of actor-singer-dancers…Right from the dazzling prologue…the bar is set for high-energy, eye-popping sequences…the entire
company impresses mightily…And “The Rumble” is grippingly visceral in its tightly choreographed bloodshed,” says Roy Dicks of The News & Observer.

“We loved Josh’s work in West Side Story and couldn’t be happier for his success. We will be watching and cheering him on!” says NC Theatre producer, Carolee Baxter.

SMASH premiers on Monday, February 6 at 10PM EST on NBC.
