RALEIGH, N.C. – March 25, 2015 – Artspace is excited to announce a partnership with Peregrine Projects and The NRP Group to curate three site-specific murals on the pedestrian walkway on Blount Street, across from Artspace and in front of the new Edison Apartments which are under construction. The murals will be up through the duration of the construction.
Artspace secured approval from the City of Raleigh Arts Commission to create the mural as a temporary public art project. Local artist Shaun Richards and The Peregrine Projects, an artist cooperative, were selected to design and create the mural. The Peregrine Projects will paint the murals on April 19th, between 8am and 6pm. In the case of inclement weather, an alternative date has been set for April 26th.
Artspace commissioned Peregrine Projects for the mural because of their stated commitment to contribute to the culture of creativity and innovation that have fueled the region’s rapid growth and popularity. In addition, six of the eight artists involved with the group were former Regional Emerging Artists-in-Residence at Artspace.
“Like Artspace, Peregrine Projects is focused on bringing art to a wider audience by removing the barriers between artists and the community,” says Artspace President & CEO Mary Poole. “Their dedication to fostering a vibrant arts community and their artists’ past history with Artspace made them the best choice for this project.”
The proposed mural design appeals to a diverse community through the use of bright, saturated color, bold design, and whimsical narrative elements. The proposal includes the repeated image of a child’s face representative of wonder, which visually connects the three containers. Additional graphic elements portray children of various ages and ethnicities playing together. Hand-painted animal masks cover the faces of some of the children heightening the curiosity of the viewer and adding to the sense of play, wonder and whimsy of the overall design.
The NRP Group is a fully integrated, premier apartment developer, general contractor and property management group. Peregrine Projects is a Raleigh, NC based artist cooperative intent on providing alternative arts programming through roaming, temporary exhibitions.
