Carolina Ballet to Perform Cinderella May 14-17 at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium
Ballet Releases Exclusive Behind the Scenes Video of Ballerina Shoe Fittings
RALEIGH, N.C. (May 12, 2015) – The award-winning Carolina Ballet will perform a limited engagement of the beloved classic Cinderella in downtown Raleigh beginning Thursday, May 14th through Sunday, May 17th. Led by Artistic Director Robert Weiss and sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina, Cinderella features an original score by Cary resident Karl Moraski, who accompanies the ballet on the piano.
Carolina Ballet’s Cinderella is a touching interpretation of the legendary fairy tale about a beautiful orphan, a fairy godmother and a charming prince, and one night of magic, love, and a fabulous pair of shoes.
Speaking of shoes that fit perfectly, nothing is more important to a ballerina than her pointe shoes, which are specially-made shoes that enable the dancer to support her entire body weight on the tips of her toes (via sturdy layers of fabric and paper hardened by glue).
Carolina Ballet invites the public to share in a behind the scenes look as their ballerinas are custom-fitted for their own performance “slippers” by world-renown Marie Johansson of Freed of London, the famed dance footwear company whose cobbler origins date back to 1929:
Pointe shoes are crafted specifically to each dancer’s physical specifications and no two pairs of pointe shoes are identical. Fittings such as these are very important for any ballet dancer and professional dancers can spend thousands a year on their shoes. Carolina Ballet typically goes through two pairs a week per person with wear and tear of performances.
