The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle will finish out its 2009-2010 concert season on Sunday, May 16, 2010. The 3 p.m. concert will be held at the Carolina Theatre in Durham and will include an All-European Program.

The All-European Program will include performances of Gioachino Rossini’s “La Cenerentola Overture,” Franz Schubert’s “Symphony no. 6 in C major, D. 589” and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Symphony no. 40 in G minor, K. 550.”

“The program presents works that were written at the cusp between the Classical and Romantic periods,” says Lorenzo Muti, artistic director and conductor of The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle. “While the language of the Mozart work tends to point to the darker colors of romanticism, the Rossini piece shines in its careless sonic joy and the Schubert symphony imitates it in an attempt to gain popularity and recognition with Viennese audiences.”

In addition, COT board member Michael Hamilton will lead the orchestra as a guest conductor in the performance of George Frideric Handel’s “Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.” Hamilton won the opportunity as the highest bidder during a live auction at the A Little Night Music XII 2009 Fall Gala, the orchestra’s signature fundraising event.

“As a lifelong classical music fan, this will be an experience to remember,” says Hamilton.” I couldn’t pass up the chance to have some fun, while supporting the COT.

To emphasize its commitment to engaging young people with great classical music, the orchestra provides free seating at every concert to students of all ages. Tickets are available at the Carolina Theatre box office or by calling 919.560.3030.
This genre-defying string quartet, influenced by its members’ longstanding participation in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, deftly employs creative programming and exciting collaborations to illuminate music in fresh ways.Born out of a desire to use the rich medium of the string quartet as a vehicle for communicating across large swaths of history and geography, Brooklyn Rider is equally devoted to the interpretation of the existing quartet literature and to the creation of new works.

This is the third concert of the 2010 September Prelude Chamber Music Festival sponsored by RCMG, Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill.
