Looking at African Art in the 21st Century

In this presentation Dr. Rebecca Martin Nagy, director of the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida and former curator of African art and associate director of education at the NCMA, grapples with the challenge of how to look at, reflect on, and talk about the rapidly evolving and dynamic field of African art. At the Harn Museum of Art she has guided the growth of the African collection to include works in a variety of media and from cultures ranging from Ethiopia to South Africa and from Ghana to Somalia. The NCMA’s African collection, handsomely installed in the new West Building, provides and excellent context for talking about African art in all of its richness, variety, complexity, and beauty. Nagy knows the collection well, since many of the works on view were acquired during her time here.

The pyramids, temples, and treasure-filled tombs have eclipsed ancient Egypt’s more intellectual pursuits. Discover ancient Egyptian literature with Egyptologist Caroline Rocheleau as she reads and discusses fairy tales, beloved stories and didactic literature written more than 2,000 years ago. The Montage Music Society is a collective of top-flight classical musicians who perform in various configurations depending upon the project. The collective has gained special notice for its ambitious and innovative program that features music inspired by specific masterpiece paintings. The NCMA’s premier chamber music concert series is produced in association with the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
