The Fiddle

The Fiddle

The Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library presents The Fiddle, a celebration of the iconic instrument of American roots music. Featuring performances and lectures on fiddle styles by top musicians and leading scholars, this series is an opportunity to enjoy and learn about the American South’s music, history, and culture.

A concert showcasing the fiddle will be held at Memorial Hall on the campus of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Friday, January 11, 2013, featuring Nashville Bluegrass Band, Byron Berline, Matt Glaser and Bobby Taylor.

The symposium will be held at Pleasants Family Assembly Room, 2nd Floor, Wilson Library on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus on Saturday, January 12, 2013 from 10am-2pm.

Scholars featured during the symposium are Paul F. Wells, former Director of the Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University and Mark Wilson, Producer, North American Traditions Series at Rounder Records. Performing are legendary Oklahoma fiddler and three-time National Fiddle Champion, Byron Berline, as well as Bobby Taylor (Fourth generation West Virginia fiddler) and Matt Glaser (Jazz and Bluegrass Fiddler, Artistic Director of the American Roots Program at the Berklee College of Music).

Steve Weiss, Curator of Southern Folklife Collection, describes the event, “This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about and enjoy a variety of music traditions ranging from bluegrass to jazz that form the bedrock of American Roots Music.”

This is the second of the three part interactive Southern Folklife Collection Instrument Series. Held in August 2012, the first symposium featured the finest banjo players performing in a packed Memorial Hall and engaging lectures from top scholars. The third and final symposium and concert in this series will focus on the steel guitar  by steel guitar great Cindy Cashdollar with “Dieselbilly” guitarist Bill Kirchen and Too Much Fun.
