SUMMARY:CAROLINA BALLET TO PREMIERE NEW GISELLE
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_26480" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Lilyan Vigo and Marcelo Martinez\, photo by Tim Lytvinenko[/caption] CAROLINA BALLET TO PREMIERE NEW GISELLE TO CLOSE 15th ANNIVERSARY SEASON RALEIGH\, NC --- Over the first fourteen seasons\, artistic director Robert Weiss has choreographed many of the great classic ballets to fit his company\, Carolina Ballet – such ballets as Swan Lake\, Sleeping Beauty\, Romeo and Juliet – now he has taken on one of the most romantic ballets of all time\, Giselle\, to present to Triangle area audiences May 16-19 and May 23\, 2013. The production will be performed at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium\, of the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh and at DPAC in Durham. The schedule of performances is as follows: Raleigh Memorial Auditorium Thursday\, Friday and Saturday\, May 16\, 17 & 18 at 8:00pm Saturday and Sunday\, May 18 & 19 at 2:00pm DPAC Thursday\, May 23 at 8:00pm Frances Mason in the book 101 stories of the Great Ballets writes about the importance of Giselle in the classical canon this way – “it is not only important historically\, it also happens to be good. It is just as popular today as when it was first performed\, more than 130 years ago. People go to see Giselle and to see new ballerinas dance it for the same reason we go to see new interpretations of Hamlet: the work is such a good one that we always discover something in it we hadn’t seen before\, some variation in performance that brings out an aspect that seemed previously concealed; we learn something new.” He goes on to say that “Giselle combines innovation with drama and dancing that make us forget all about history. Giselle’s innovation is its summing up of what we know as the Romantic ballet. To be romantic about something is to see what you are and to wish for something entirely different. This requires magic.” Giselle was first choreographed by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli to music by Adolphe Adam and presented in Paris in 1841. The version we know today was choreographed by Marius Petipa in St Petersburg in 1884 and it is this version that Diaghilev presented to Europe in 1911. Robert Weiss is staying with the Petipa choreography with a few modifications to accommodate the size of his company. Former Carolina Ballet principal dancer Melissa Podcasy and Ballet Master Marin Boieru\, who danced the roles of Giselle and Albrecht together on many occasions\, coached the three principal couples (Margaret Severin-Hansen / Gabor Kapin; Lilyan Vigo / Richard Krusch; and Jan Burkhard / Marcelo Martinez) in preparation for the Raleigh premiere. The scenery and costumes are from Florence\, Italy\, again with alterations and additions by Carolina Ballet’s design team of Jeff A. R. Jones (scenery) and Kerri Martinsen (costumes). In speaking about Giselle\, artistic director Robert Weiss says “If there were one ballet that would be considered by balletomanes to be more important than all the others it would be Giselle\,” says Weiss. “There has been a running debate since ballet’s early history among critics\, the audiences and practitioners of the art about whether ballet should tell a story or just be about the dance. Giselle combines both of these points of view into one of the greatest works in western civilization.” In 1972 dance critic Peter Williams reviewed Giselle at the Royal Ballet in London saying “Giselle is probably the most deceptive role in all classical dance since sheer dancing ability is not enough to make it work. The ballerina has to be totally convincing as a human and\, later\, as a supernatural being.” Single tickets for Giselle may be purchased through the Carolina Ballet box office at 919 719-0900\, through Ticketmaster at 800 982-2787\, or on the Carolina Ballet website at www.carolinaballet.com. Individual tickets range from $25-66 and there is a $10 student rush ticket that may be purchased with a student ID one half hour before the show. At the close of its fifteenth season\, Carolina Ballet\, Inc. takes its place among America’s premier arts organizations. Under the innovative direction of artistic director Robert Weiss\, a talented company\, fiscally responsible management and community support\, Carolina Ballet continues to expose audiences to traditional ballet by legendary masters and new works of contemporary choreographers. The company reflects the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit and ever-increasing quality of life experienced in North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Rhapsody in Blue - December Songs
DESCRIPTION: CAROLINA BALLET’S 15TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON CONTINUES WITH DIVERSE LYNNE TAYLOR-CORBETT PROGRAM Stage Premiere of Gershwin Ballet by Company Dancer Zalman Raffael RALEIGH\, NC --- Now that Carolina Ballet’s Nutcracker has been put to bed for another season\, the Triangle area’s professional ballet company is ready to launch the first of the spring programs of its 15th anniversary season with a diverse selection of ballets by Lynne Taylor-Corbett and company member\, Zalman Raffael. The program consists of Taylor-Corbett’s December Songs and Code of Silence; and Rhapsody in Blue to Gershwin’s romantic score choreographed by Raffael. The program opens February 7-24\, 2013 at the AJ Fletcher Theater at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Raleigh\, and runs for eleven performances over three weekends. The schedule of performances is as follows: Thursday\, February 7 at 8:00pm Friday\, February 8 at 8:00pm Saturdays\, February 9\, 16 & 23 at 2:00pm & 8:00pm Sundays\, February 10\, 17 & 24 at 2:00pm Lynne Taylor-Corbett choreographed December Songs on Carolina Ballet in 2000. It is set to the music of Maury Yeston\, who composed the score and wrote the lyrics for the 100th anniversary celebration of New York City’s Carnegie Hall in 1991. The music is called a “song cycle” and is made up of love songs from which Ms. Taylor-Corbett created vignettes that are gut-wrenching\, joyous and speak to “anyone who’s loved and lost and hopes to love again.” The lyrics will be sung by Raleigh’s own Broadway star Lauren Kennedy\, with Glenn Mehrbach accompanying her on the piano\, live on stage\, as the dancers bring the stories to life. In 2002\, when Carolina Ballet reprised the program\, the News & Observer said of December Songs “they are cries from the heart in which the dancers seem to embody the singer’s psyche.” Lauren Kennedy and her husband Alan Campbell are the directors of Raleigh’s Hot Summer Nights at The Kennedy. Lauren was seen in 2011 at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium in a dazzling performance in the title role of Evita. Code of Silence\, choreographed in summer 2008\, during Carolina Ballet’s summer intensive at UNC Wilmington\, takes a 180 degree turn from songs of lost love to issues of human rights (and is dedicated to Amnesty International) showing a much darker side of human nature. The ballet is set to the riveting music of Estonian composer Arvo Part and the reviewer in the News & Observer called it “nothing short of a masterpiece.” Code of Silence opens with scenes of imprisonment\, torture\, death\, disbelief and large-scale havoc that could be anywhere in the world\, but as the News & Observer goes on to say it “isn’t all dour. It’s also a moving tribute to the resilience of human bonds\, to the enduring comfort of fond memories and to the power of compassion and community to overcome trauma and tyranny.” The third ballet on the program\, Rhapsody in Blue\, was choreographed by dancer Zalman Raffael to the ever popular score of George Gershwin. Raffael choreographed his ballet in January 2012 on thirteen Carolina Ballet dancers as a studio workshop during the dancers’ winter break. It was then presented to a small audience at Carolina Ballet’s studio with an enthusiastic response. Artistic Director Robert Weiss explains “I like to encourage young choreographers. Ballet is an art form that cannot be created at home alone\, unlike writers who only need a pen and paper. Ballets rely totally on a collaborative process between choreographers and dancers and for that reason is an expensive proposition.” Weiss says that his mentor\, George Balanchine\, was fond of saying “my muse comes to me on union time.” Raffael raised the money from friends\, mostly outside the Triangle region\, so he would be able to pay the dancers for two weeks of their time as he choreographed on them. This production will be the stage premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. It is still possible to purchase a subscription for the remaining four productions of the 2012-2013 season\, and may be accomplished by calling the Carolina Ballet box office at 919 719-0900. Single tickets may be purchased through the box office as well\, and through Ticketmaster at 919 982-2787\, or on the Carolina Ballet website at www.carolinaballet.com. Individual tickets range from $28-66 and there is a $10 student rush ticket that may be purchased with a student ID on half hour before the show. Now into the fifteenth season\, Carolina Ballet\, Inc. has taken its place among America’s premier arts organizations.

SUMMARY:THE MAGIC OF NUTCRACKER
DESCRIPTION: CAROLINA BALLET TO CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH THE MAGIC OF NUTCRACKER RALEIGH\, NC --- With the success of Carolina Ballet’s “new” Nutcracker last season\, artistic director Robert Weiss decided to expand the run of the annual holiday favorite for the company’s 15th anniversary season to include Thanksgiving weekend 2012. “Many families come into town for Thanksgiving\,” says Weiss\, “so we wanted to be sure they had a chance to see our new show if they weren’t going to get back for Christmas.” Carolina Ballet will present Nutcracker\, accompanied by live orchestra for all performances\, at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium (RMA)\, November 23-25 and December 14-23; and at DPAC\, in Durham\, December 29 & 30. The schedule of performances is: [caption id="attachment_22629" align="aligncenter" width="600"] All photos courtesy of Chris Walt Photography[/caption] At Raleigh Memorial Auditorium Friday\, Saturday & Sunday\, November 23-25\, 2012 at 2pm each day Friday\, December 14 at 7:30pm Saturday\, December 15\, at 2 & 7:30pm Sunday\, December 16\, at 12:30 & 4:30pm Tuesday\, Wednesday & Thursday\, December 18-20 at 7:30pm each day Friday & Saturday\, December 21 & 22\, at 2 & 7:30pm both days Sunday\, December 23\, at 2pm At Memorial Hall Saturday December 1at 2pm & 8pm Sunday\, December 2 at 2pm At DPAC Saturday\, December 29 at 7pm Sunday\, December 30 at 2pm After ten successful seasons of presenting nearly 200 performances of Carolina Ballet’s traditional Nutcracker\, artistic director Robert Weiss decided in 2011 to make some changes to the annual holiday program with new scenery\, designed by Jeff A.R. Jones; and grand illusions for the Party Scene of Act I. Weiss approached several magicians with his idea\, but it wasn’t until he came upon Rick Thomas\, one of the top magicians working in Las Vegas\, that he found what he was looking for - someone who would offer the “wow factor” without taking anything away from the elegance of the Victorian Christmas Eve scene. Not only had Rick Thomas been in the magic business with nightly shows in Las Vegas for twenty-plus years\, but he and his sister had been junior ballroom dancing champions\, giving him a true appreciation of music and dance. Weiss said “he understood the music and the music is very important\, we just couldn’t stop the show and put the tricks in.” Rick Thomas was clear from the outset that he was not going to create a magic show\, saying “we designed this where the magic was woven into the story rather than it being a magic show…I think we nailed it.” The critics thought so too saying “the gasps after each eye-popping illusion\, the applause for the handsome new sets and the rapt attention from all the children confirmed the changes were worth it.” (News & Observer) The Party Scene in Act I of Nutcracker centers around the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer\, a toymaker and godfather to the Stahlbaum’s daughter\, Clara. He arrives at the party with his nephew and proceeds to entertain the guests with wonderful illusions – grand scale magic\, replacing the standard parlor tricks – culminating with a special guest appearing out of a giant book to give Clara the Nutcracker doll Drosselmeyer has made for her. What most people don’t realize is that Tchaikovsky wrote the magic sections into the original score\, therefore adding “real” magic wasn’t changing anything it was just enhancing what was already there. The magic during the Party Scene isn’t the only magic going on in Nutcracker. There is plenty of magic behind the scenes getting the show ready. It all starts in early September when more than two hundred children line up around the building of Carolina Ballet’s studios to get their chance to audition for a role in Nutcracker. There are 67 roles for children in a cast which includes the Party children\, Truffles\, Soldiers\, Mice\, Gingerbread Cookies\, Arabian attendants\, and of course Clara and her little brother\, Fritz. Rehearsals begin right after the auditions with Lori Christman Bourtasenkov working her own magic throughout the fall to get the 130-plus children ready for the stage. “Being in Nutcracker was a dream come true for me when I was a little boy\,” says Robert Weiss. “These children work hard and by the time we get to the stage they are really good. They know their counts and their spots. It isn’t easy but they do a terrific job.” The professional dancers of Carolina Ballet are the glitz and the glamour but the children are an integral part. Without them\, there would be no Nutcracker. Ticket prices for Nutcracker range from $20-80 and may be purchased by calling the Carolina Box Office at 919 719-0900; through Ticketmaster at 800 982-2787; or at Carolina Ballet’s website - www.carolinaballet.com.

Generations of audiences - more than 60 million people from 68 countries - have seen Lord of the Dance. Presented by MagicSpace Entertainment and Global Entertainment Group\, the tour arrives in the Triangle at DPAC on March 10\, 2012. Tickets: Online at DPACnc.com DPAC Ticket Center: 919.680.2787\, 123 Vivian Street\, Durham\, NC Ticketmaster.com / Ticketmaster Charge by phone at 800.745.3000 Speaking about the show’s updates\, Flatley says\, “We have fresh wardrobes and an exciting new set featuring elements from the successful international tour I performed in last year – we sold out more than 20 dates in the UK. Fans will see technological highlights like video incorporated into an LED wall\, as well as a number of changes to the overall lighting and set designs.” Flatley\, who retired from dancing in 2011\, is Artistic Director of Lord of the Dance and oversees all aspects of the production. “We are really excited to introduce our fans to the new visual experience that compliments our show.” Flatley added that new interest in dancing sparked by primetime shows like “Dancing with the Stars” has fans anxious to see more Lord of the Dance style shows. Flatley was a special guest on “Dancing with the Stars” in the seventh season and performed on the show in 2007 and 2008. A 2012 Valentine’s Day tour launch is merely coincidence\, but is fitting since an integral part of the show is a love story between the two main characters. “Lord of the Dance is a classic tale of good versus evil\, based on Irish folklore that brings a romantic and passionate love story to life\,” says Flatley. The story is based upon mythical Irish folklore as Don Dorcha\, Lord of Darkness\, challenges the ethereal lord of light\, the Lord of the Dance. “Battle lines are drawn\, passions ignite and a love story fueled by the dramatic leaps and turns of dancers’ bodies begins to build against a backdrop of Celtic rhythm\,” says Flatley. “Fans can expect 21 scenes of precision dancing\, dramatic music\, new colorful wardrobes and state-of-the-art staging and lighting.” Along with Dance Director Marie Duffy-Pask\, Flatley hand picks the cast of over 40 dancers; each has achieved individual recognition as a national or worldwide dance champion. Lee Marshall\, CEO ofMagicSpace Entertainment\, the tour promoter and veteran of blockbuster entertainment events agrees. “These championship dancers have captivated a new generation of fans\, and manage the impossible every night. Their collective spirit and energy takes the audience to a time and place that is as imaginative as it is inviting.” Flatley conceptualized and staged the show in a mere 16 weeks but also paid particular attention to the costumes\, lighting and staging which are cinematic in scope. “Irish dance lovers and music fans alike will experience the engaging\, rhythmic adventures that has helped catapult Celtic dance mania and Irish dancing into the global spotlight\,” says Flatley. No wonder Lord of the Dance ticket sales exceed more than $800 million worldwide. Described by the New York Post as "fascinating\, rewarding and above all\, entertaining\," and by the Los Angeles Times as "a showpiece extravaganza\," Lord of the Dance is a mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern Celtic music and dance. SUMMARY:CAROLINA BALLET PAYS TRIBUTE TO GEORGE BALANCHINE
DESCRIPTION:During its first 14 seasons Carolina Ballet has introduced Triangle area audiences to 23 ballets choreographed by the legendary George Balanchine\, founder and artistic director of New York City Ballet and mentor to Robert Weiss. In fact\, for Carolina Ballet’s inaugural production in October 1998\, Weiss presented an All Balanchine Evening of which the critics raved\, saying “it was like catching a tour stop by New York City Ballet.” For this program that runs October 11-28 at the A. J. Fletcher Theater of the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh\, Robert Weiss has selected five Balanchine ballets to show his dancers in the best light – Apollo\, Who Cares?\, Agon Pas de Deux\, Valse Fantaisie and Tarantella. The schedule of performances is as follows: Thursday\, October 11 at 8pm Friday\, October 12 at 8pm Saturday October 13\, 20 & 27 at 2pm & 8pm Sunday\, October 14\, 21 & 28 at 2pm [caption id="attachment_15743" align="alignright" width="300"] Carolina Ballet's Margaret Severin-Hansen[/caption] One of Balanchine’s early ballets\, Apollo was choreographed to music by Igor Stravinsky for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and first presented in Paris in 1928. Its first American production was in 1937 at the Metropolitan Opera House. To the Greeks\, Apollo represented many things\, but for the purposes of Balanchine’s ballet Stravinsky focused on Apollo as he is associated with the arts and his relationship with the Muses - Calliope (poetry)\, Polyhymnia (mime) and Terpsichore (dance). Who Cares? is Balanchine’s tribute to Broadway and the Gershwin brothers with whom he had a long and very close relationship. Balanchine choreographed the ballet in 1970 to celebrate the 100th birthday of George Gershwin. He chose 16 songs that Gershwin composed from 1924-1931 to portray an American exuberance charged with the distinctive energy of Manhattan. Artistic Director Robert Weiss says “Balanchine wanted the audience to be dancing in the aisles as they left the theater after seeing a performance of Who Cares?.” The other ballets on the program further show the breadth of Balanchine’s artistry – Valse Fantaisie is a small romantic ballet to music of Mikhail Glinka. It features a pas de deux couple and four additional women. Weiss says “it is deceptively simple in its steps but fiendishly difficult to execute.” The two pas de deux are also very different. Agon Pas de Deux is another collaborative effort with Igor Stravinsky. Agon\, the ballet from which the pas de deux is taken\, premiered in 1957 and was a sensation. It was the first of Balanchine’s “black and white ballets” which\, Terry Teachout explains in his book All in the Dances\, were a “long series of works he [Balanchine] would set to twentieth century music and present in practice clothes on a bare stage..” Tarantella\, on the other hand\, is a light hearted pas deux to music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk that Balanchine choreographed for vibrant\, athletic dancers - taking his cue from Italian street dancers who would entertain the crowds in village squares\, who in turn would throw coins into a tambourine to show their appreciation. Ticket prices for A Balanchine Celebration range from $28-66 and are available by calling the Carolina Ballet box office at 919 719-0900 or through Ticketmaster at 800 982-2787. Now into the fifteenth season\, Carolina Ballet\, Inc. has taken its place among America’s premier arts organizations.
