About the Performance
“For the shared experience of the pure joy of dance, it doesn’t get any better than Philadanco and Rennie Harris Puremovement.” –The Philadelphia Tribune
“Art has always spoken directly to the social climate, injustice, and the need for change. “Straight Outta Philly” is in perfect timing and will add a great deal to the conversation about the fight for equality happening nationwide.” –The Philadelphia Sunday Sun
In Straight Outta’ Philly, two of the countries’ premiere dance companies join forces for a timely fusion of hip-hop and contemporary dance. This shared evening includes dances from each of their extensive repertories, alongside a powerful new work choreographed by Rennie Harris and danced by both companies.
Founded by Joan Myers Brown in 1970, The Philadelphia Dance Company, better known as “Philadanco!” has been celebrated worldwide for their innovation, creativity, and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in modern dance. The company’s superbly trained dancers are known for their artistic integrity, electrifying performances and grace.
Rennie Harris Puremovement (RHPM) emerged over 20 years ago as a force on the hip-hop scene and the dance world at large. Harris founded RHPM based on the belief that hip-hop is the most important original expression of a new generation, with the unique ability to express universal themes that extend beyond racial, religious and economic boundaries. RHPM has received countless awards including the Pew Fellowship in the Arts for Choreography and a Bessie Award.
