The Mound Builders is an almost prescient reflection on current hostilities in America – between rural and urban, between women and the men who harass them, between the intelligentsia and the masses.
The action takes place on an archaeological dig in the Midwest. It concerns a group of university archaeologists whose dig causes great misfortune for a local landowner, Chad Jasker, on whose property they are digging. There are dire consequences. As he becomes aware that his fortune is being threatened, Jasker fights to be acknowledged, to secure his family’s riches and to be loved — even when that love is clearly unrequited.
The Ward Theatre Company will open its 2018 season with The Mound Builders and has double cast the show with a dozen actors from the Company’s actor training program (Ward Acting Studio). Nearly all of the performers have been featured in previous Company productions including Jacuzzi (Top Ten Plays of 2016, INDY Week), I Wish You A Boat and Revival (Top Ten Outstanding Productions of 2017, Triangle Arts & Entertainment). Three of the actresses are Australian and rehearsed their roles from Melbourne over video conferencing technology.
