For years, The Second City has made inroads by creating hysterical comedy delivered by comedians well known for their radical approaches to sensitive topics. From the spot-on impersonations done by comedy legend Tina Fey to the frantic and irreverent work of John Belushi, performers from The Second City’s troupes have delighted audiences for the past 50 years. And if the troupe that visited The Carolina Theater in Durham on Friday night is any indication, they will continue to delight audiences for another 50 years.
With his untamed locks bouncing beneath a pork pie hat or baseball cap as he paces the stage, Steven Wright rattles off a series of wry one-liners — such as “What’s another word for thesaurus?” “Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm,” and “When everything is coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane” — zinger after zinger, punctuated by an occasional musical interlude.
The N.C. Comedy Arts Festival and The Carolina Theatre will present “The Second City: Laughing Matters,” a no-holds-barred live performance the by up-and-coming comedians from the legendary Chicago-based improv-based sketch comedy troupe, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb 8th, at The Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham, NC. Second City alumni include John Belushi, John Candy, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Catherine O’Hara, and Gilda Radner.
