Richard Krawiec’s “Creeds” Sheds Too Little Light on Why FBI Agent Robert Hanssen Became a Soviet Spy

PlayGround’s current world premiere of Richard Krawiec’s psychological drama, “Creeds” puts the double life of Federal Bureau of Investigation agent-turned-Soviet and later Russian spy Robert Hanssen under a microscope, but doesn’t reveal nearly enough about his motives or answer the question of whether his wife, Bonnie, was a co-conspirator in — or an innocent victim of — his treasonous endeavors.

Richard Krawiec’s New Play “Creeds” Tells the Story of FBI Agent-Turned Soviet Spy Robert Hanssen

“I just happened upon a brief story about Robert Hanssen in researching another topic,” recalls “Creeds” dramatist Richard Krawiec, “and as I read it, I became fascinated with his wife, Bonnie. The story didn’t add up. Having worked as an investigative reporter, things just didn’t jibe. So, I spent a lot of time researching articles, reading books — about six or so — watching movies.”
