The Will McBride Group (WMG), hailed as one of Central North Carolina’s top jazz and funk bands, announces today the release of their debut CD, “Trifecta.”  The WMG is a guitar-based jazz trio that presents a unique blend of jazz, edgy funk, pop and Latin stylings, full of rich, color-chording and distinctive vocals, all supported with superb rhythmic backing.  “Trifecta” is an energetic collection of jazz and Latin-influenced pop and funk that showcases the Group’s polished musicianship, composition, and arrangement capabilities.  The CD contains eleven songs including six original compositions and five original arrangements of songs from artists like Steely Dan, Duke Ellington, and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Impressive results appear throughout “Trifecta”, tracked and mixed at the Triangle’s most respected jazz recording studio, Overdub Lane, in Durham, NC and mastered at the Southeast’s premier mastering studio, Kitchen Mastering, in Carrboro, NC.  “Small jazz/fusion trios are among my favorites to record,” says Thom Canova, recording engineer at Overdub Lane.  “The musicianship and energy in this group allowed me to capture what was happening without having to correct musician errors.  This record is hot!”

With over fifty years of collective stage experience, the members of this five year old group have shared the stage with world renown musicians from groups including “Godfather of Soul” James Brown, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Latin Grammy saxophonist David Sanchez, Nantucket, and Duke University’s John Brown Quintet.

“The improvisational freedom of jazz, the melodic nature of pop, and the rhythms of both Latin and funk music are all part of what we create in our live show”, says Will McBride, principle songwriter/composer, lead vocalist, and guitarist.  “Trifecta is a snapshot of what we do live.”

The album opener, Picture Windows, is a stream-of-consciousness social commentary about questioning the value of the “rat race”.  This strong tune jumps right out of the gate with a captivating funk groove.  The hooky “call and answer” vocals on the chorus are subtle but effective, and the swing bridge is an unexpectedly twist.

Mine is more in the pop genre with its catchy chorus vocals and 60’s ‘surfer’ feel.  It tells a story of a dream that manifests itself.  The rhythmic nature of the vocals use expertly woven lyrics.  The song displays a delightful ‘gumbo’ of several obvious musical influences throughout the tune.

w-2Keep On Keepin’ On is built on an infectious and spacious hip-hop groove from drummer Chris Conley and bassist Jeff Hatley.  McBride adds compelling lyrics, along with imaginative guitar work.  The lyrics implore the protagonist not to let circumstances defeat him, including a pointed reminder that “its not only about you, people need you to make it through”.  Very positive and powerful tune, both musically and lyrically.

Blue Mex snatches you like one of those electromagnetic roller coasters.  From the opening phrase, the anticipation builds, and the acceleration exhilarates.  Weaving in and out of Conley’s efforts as drummer and percussionist, guitar and bass from McBride and Hatley effortlessly interplay over complex Latin rhythms.  The bridge’s echoed swells are a nice counterpoint, giving the listener a reprieve before the energy picks up again.  Caliente!!

w-3Dichotomy is a masterfully written song whose clever lyrics implore a teen, prone to poor decisions through bad advice and parental apathy, to decide to live up to his true potential.  A nice punchy swing groove backs complex jazz chording and walking bass, and then the rhythm drops to a subtle half-time feel behind the guitar lead.  McBride delivers a compelling melodic guitar performance throughout.

Hat Dance, an instrumental that punches you in the face with hot Latin spice.  Hatley and Conley set a muscular foundation from the outset, while the guitar melody dances playfully on top.  Particularly intriguing is the echoey, melodic style on half the guitar lead, then the switch to a clean and more staccato Montgomery-style octave lead in the last half, both done by McBride.  This one grabs your attention like biting into a habanero, and persists like an August afternoon south of the border!
