Proud to be opening its season on September 19th at The ArtsCenter, The Monti is seizing the opportunity to make this its biggest show yet! The Monti, which has been home to such local favorites as Clyde Edgerton, Daniel Wallace, Jill McCorkle, Tom Rankin, Dan Ariely, Randall Kenan, and Frank Stasio, invites interesting members of the community to share personal narratives with an audience. From the comedic and absurd to the deeply painful and dramatic, it’s just simple storytelling.
There are 4 hard and fast rules that every Monti Storyteller follows: 1) the stories are all true; 2) the stories align with the theme of the evening; 3) the stories are 12 minutes or less; and 4) the storytellers do not use notes. Aside from those rules, anything goes…and boy does it ever! These refreshing, unexpected, and poignant narratives suspend audiences all the way through the very last word of the evening.
September 19th’s theme is “Heroes”—delightful tales of those influential characters who have shaped who the storytellers are today. The lineup includes Hillsborough novelist and Emmy Award Winner, Michael Malone; novelist and Salon.com Staff Writer, Louis Bayard; Frontman for The Old Ceremony, Django Haskins; Pulitzer Prize-nominated Greensboro-based journalist and author, Justin Catanoso; and writer, Sophie Naima Caird. That’s right, in one fell swoop The Monti is going both national with Louis Bayard from Washington D.C. and international with Sophie Naima Caird from Montreal, Canada.
Selling out shows across the Triad since April 2008, The Monti will accommodate the demand for the increasingly popular storytelling series in the larger venue at The ArtsCenter. Yes, everyone has a story to tell, and The Monti proves it every night!
