“Branford Marsalis and Friends: A Benefit Night
for the North Carolina Symphony

Branford Marsalis presents an evening of unforgettable performances from across the musical spectrum, June 8. The Grammy Award-winning saxophonist joins forces with jazz pianist Joey Calderazzo, old-time string band Big Medicine, gospel vocalist Tina Morris-Anderson, a North Carolina Symphony string quartet and other amazing talents for a one-of-a-kind concert to benefit the North Carolina Symphony’s statewide service and education programs.

North Carolina Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn hosts “Branford Marsalis and Friends: A Benefit Night for the North Carolina Symphony” at Meymandi Concert Hall in downtown Raleigh’s Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets go on sale Monday, April 19, at 10:00 a.m. at ncsymphony.org and by phone at 919.733.2750. They can also be purchased at ticketmaster.com, 800.745.3000.

A New Orleans native born into a distinguished musical family, Marsalis has blazed new trails as both an instrumentalist and composer in his celebrated explorations of jazz, funk, blues and classical music. He has also dedicated his career to advancing music and jazz appreciation in the classroom, including a unique residency with his quartet at North Carolina Central University in Durham. Marsalis is also a board member of the North Carolina Symphony Society, Inc.

“Branford has become an important member of our symphony family,” says Symphony President and CEO David Chambless Worters. “This musical evening will be a once-in-a-lifetime event. We’re deeply grateful to Branford for this gift to the community.”

The concert comes as the Symphony continues to raise $8 million in community support by June 30. The organization, founded in 1932 as the first state-sponsored symphony in the country, is three-quarters of the way toward the goal, which will earn an additional $1.5 million matching grant from the state. Adds Worters, “This evening represents a great chance for us to move ever-closer to meeting our $8 million challenge from the State of North Carolina.”
