Jonathan Fitts is a New York City based playwright, director, composer, and dramaturg. Over the past several years, Jon’s plays have been performed across the east coast from Florida to Massachusetts. Jon was recently the recipient of the Kennedy Center’s David L. Shelton Award in playwriting for his play THE PURSUIT OF MR.ROCKEFELLER, recently produced in Boone, NC and Daytona Beach, FL. It recently received a reading in New York City at Davenport Theatrical Studios. Last year, his play RED BUG, produced at Old Dominion University in fall of 2011, was a regional nominee for the Kennedy Center’s national short play award. This year, his one-act play WHITE OR THE MUSKOX PLAY won the Kennedy Center’s John Cauble Outstanding Short Play Award and was a finalist for the O’Neill National Playwright’s Conference. It will be published in the Applause Books anthology, “The Best American Short Plays 2011-2012,” this August. His play LOBOTOMOBILE was a finalist for the 2013 terraNOVA Groundbreakers Playwrights Group and was recently workshopped at The Public Theater through New York University. He was recently commissioned to develop an immersive experience based on Akutagawa’s, “Hell Screen.”
Other produced works include syzygy in erebus, a summoning (Experiment America/Huntington Rep./A.R.T.), the musical WHITECHAPEL (Campbell University, NCTC), IN TIME (Know Theatre), THE LAST DRINK OF QUINCY WRIGHT (SETC, ACTF), PLAYGROUND (Burning Coal Theatre Company Second Stage), THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLAYS AND BICYCLES (The Distillery Collective), workshops of WHITE OR THE MUSKOX PLAY and BELVEDERE OR THE BREASTS OF MICKEY CLARKE (both at Cape Cod Theatre Project), and staged readings of OUTRUNNING BULLETS (Burning Coal Theatre Company), HIBAKUSHA (KCACTF Region 1) and GAS (Appalachian State University).
Jon also composed music for the American premiere of David Edgar’s THE SHAPE OF THE TABLE, the world premiere of E. Bert Wallace’s QUEM QUERITIS, and a regionally acclaimed production of Gao Xingjian’s THE OTHER SHORE. He also co-composed the music for Burning Coal Theatre Company’s adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s JUDE THE OBSCURE, PARTS 1 & 2.
Jon is a company member with Burning Coal Theatre Company and is also an alumnus of the Kennedy Center’s Playwriting Intensive, working with such artists as Paula Vogel, Marsha Norman, David Ives, Kristoffer Diaz, and Jocelyn Clarke. He was the inaugural Kennedy Center Fellow with Cape Cod Theatre Project. Jon is an MFA Candidate in Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and is the recipient of a departmental fellowship.
