The Carolina Theatre of Durham will present the fabulous Flying Karamazov Brothers, winners of a 1981 OBIE Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway Theatre and an International Jugglers Association Award of Excellence in 2004, at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1st, in Fletcher Hall in the heart of the Bull City. The tongue-in-cheek motto of the Seattle, WA-juggling and comedy troupe is, “Art. But Funnier.”
The Carolina Theatre forewarns its patrons to “Expect the unexpected with The Flying Karamazov Brothers, featuring the four self-proclaimed eccentric lunatics spicing things up with a zany showcase filled with laugh-out-loud comedy, wild theatrics, arcane errata, and astonishing juggling feats. Formed at UC Santa Cruz in 1973, The Flying Karamazov Brothers have been seen around the world, on Broadway, on television, and on the big screen.”
On their Facebook page, the Brothers confess:
“We are a continuing experiment in comedy, theatre, music and, of course, juggling. From the beginning, it has been our intention to blend the worlds of performance art, improvisation, word play, harmony, emotion and above all virtuosity into a unique form of theatre and entertainment.
“And we mean to entertain. Taking our cue from Shakespeare, we bring art and accessible entertainment to the stage. Comedy is our bread and butter and we layer it on so that children of 2 or 92 will laugh at the same moment for very different reasons.
“Each of the Brothers brings his area of expertise to our enterprise. Mark Ettinger (Alexei) is our resident musician, composer and conductor. Rod Kimball (Pavel) is our master juggler. Paul Magid (Dmitri) is our writer, director, and founder. Stephen Bent (Zossima) is exceptionally tall and adorable.
“We play at the edge of our ability but to a purpose. Our main contention is that errors make us human but by working together we approach the divine. For us juggling is dropping.
“We continue to grow and learn. Our intention is expand the horizons of comedy and entertainment. Our next shows will explore the idea of what a live audience is as we continue to find new ways to astonish by air, by laughs and by scene.”
Time Out New York calls The Flying Karamazov Brothers “Delightful!”; Variety claims, “Nobody leaves the theater without a big grin!”; and The New York Times pegs the Brothers’ performance as “As close to a sure thing as can be found onstage, 100 minutes of cleverness and comedy that go by in a flash!”
“Whether they’re tossing around tenpins or balls,” writes the New York Daily News, “they do it with such power, skill and grace that it takes on its own rhythmic elegance and beauty.”
The Wall Street Journal raves, “The Karamazovs deliver visual and verbal one-liners, all while creatively tossing about anything they can get their hands on!”
Associated Press calls The Flying Karamazov Brothers’ show “A triumph of theatrical silliness combined with serious juggling skills and musicianship” and adds “Get to the [the theater] and give your inner child a hundred minutes of fast-paced fun.”
Roma Torre of NY1 adds, “Nothing comes close to matching the quartet’s extraordinary brand of entertainment! Don’t walk, don’t run, fly to see the amazing Karamazovs!”
