For a stunning fourth year in a row, the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble (TYJE) is among the 15 jazz big bands selected nationally to attend the 24th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. The competition will take place at the Jazz at Lincoln Center home, Frederick P. Rose Hall, in New York City from May 9 through 11, 2019. The musicians in TYJE will have the opportunity to not only compete, but participate in workshops lead by renowned musicians and make valuable connections with jazz musicians from across the nation.
To be chosen to compete in Essentially Ellington is a major accomplishment. TYJE was among 112 high school jazz bands across North America that entered the competition by submitting recordings of three tunes performed from charts from Jazz at the Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington library. Further, the selection is limited to three bands from each of five regions to facilitate participation from across the USA. To have been selected four years in a row is certainly something for the musicians of TYJE and the Philharmonic Association to be proud of. North Carolina and the Triangle area can take pride in TYJE’s accomplishment as the band’s continued success speaks to the strength of our artistic community.
The young musicians of the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble have worked hard for the opportunity to attend this year’s Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival, but in order to afford the trip, the band needs your support. We want the musicians to focus on getting ready to be among the top three bands, as they did in 2016. Tax deductible donations are processed by TYJE’s parent organization, Philharmonic Association (a 501-c-3 nonprofit). All donations from this Facebook fundraiser will go toward the TYJE trip. Thank you for your support!
