CHAPEL HILL, NC- Awe-inspiring puppet troupe, Paperhand Puppet Intervention, returns August 4 with their 18th annual theatrical giant puppet pageant spectacle for all ages, OF WINGS AND FEET! Their annual original show is fantastically brought to life using gigantic puppets, elaborate masks, stilt walkers, multi person marionettes, shadows, and illuminated puppets. The troupe weaves a tapestry of story using all of these elements choreographed to the soundtrack of live original music by the Paperhand band.
OF WINGS AND FEET is a wild, wondrous spectacle for all ages, persuasions, and demographics. Discover what it means to be human, if you’re a bird or a turtle. Help humanity find its unique place in the world by joining the Circus of Beginnings and Ends. Connect with the living land, sea, and sky in an epic display of wonder, struggle and resistance for our times. The friendly but fierce puppeteers and musicians of Paperhand invite you to join the puppet revolution this summer!
“This year is a wild ride for us all as we discover the piece together with our hearts set on shifting the current paradigm. It’s an absolute adventure in art!,” says Paperhand co-founder and director, Donovan Zimmerman. “We are really trying to have our shows be an antidote to some of the craziness in the world.”
“It’s so inspiring to see so many people (hundreds!) from cast members and musicians to volunteers and kickstarter supporters along with others who put so much time and energy into this project ” says Jan Burger, Paperhand co-founder and director. “We are in awe at the magnitude and scale these productions have taken on. We’re just along for the ride.”
The Paperhand Band this year is an exciting mix of veterans like Jonathan Henderson (base/keys), Will Ridenour (kora/percussion) and Pete Lewis (drums/effects) along with newcomers to the pit Shana Tucker (Cello/vocals), Beverly Botsford (percussion/sounds), and Quran Kerriem (trombone/keys). This dynamic ensemble created the original score to this year’s show and is worth the ticket price right from the start.

ABOUT PAPERHAND PUPPET INTERVENTION:
Paperhand Puppet Intervention was born from the creative collaboration of Donovan Zimmerman and Jan Burger in 1999. Their vision is inspired by their love for the earth and its creatures as well as their belief in justice, equality and peace. Paperhand’s mission is to produce work that inspires people, promotes social change, and moves people to positive action in their lives. The puppet shows they create are a synthesis of many artists and art forms including, but not limited to: sculpting, painting, music, dance, improvisation, costume/set design, writing, and theater. They have become a tradition for many thousands in the Triangle and beyond with attendance of over 18,000 in 2016. In 2013 they were honored with the Goodmon Award and for several years they have been voted one of The Independent Weekly’s Best of the Triangle for live theatre for the past 5 years!
